LYON 2015 Late Night Devotions 1

I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed,

for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

Devotion #1:  Be strong and courageous!

Gathering Prayer:  (Ask a youth to lead this prayer, in these or similar words)

God of all, we thank you for our safe arrival here tonight.  Open our hearts and minds, that we might hear what you are trying to tell us this weekend, and to respond.  In your name we pray, Amen.

Questions:  Answer the following questions together as a group.  Ask someone to record your answers, as they will help in planning for future years.

Why did you come to LYON Assembly this year?

What are you bringing to this experience?  (Could be good or distracting)

What do you hope to get out of this weekend?

Activity:  Our theme verse for LYON Assembly this year is at the top of the sheet.  At the end of the weekend, we will all proclaim it together.  To that end, your group will come up with motions to act out the first 2 phrases from this verse tonight: “I hereby command you:  Be strong and courageous”.  You might want to write down some notes so you remember these motions tomorrow night.  Practice them until everyone in your group has them down.

Closing Prayer:  (Ask a youth to lead this prayer, in these or similar words)

O Lord, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown.   Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
